Who is Chris Davis?
For those who don’t know, Chris Davis is a former professional baseball player for the Baltimore Orioles. He played for the team from 2011 until his retirement in 2020. While he had some successful seasons, Davis is perhaps best known for his struggles at the plate in recent years.
In 2018, Davis set a record for the longest hitless streak in MLB history, going 0-54 at the plate. The streak lasted from September 2018 to April 2019, and during that time, Davis became somewhat of a punching bag for fans and critics alike.
How did the memes start?
The first Chris Davis meme appeared on social media in late 2018, during the height of his hitless streak. The meme featured a picture of Davis with the caption “I’m not saying I’m Chris Davis, but have you ever seen us in the same room together?” implying that the person in the photo was also incapable of hitting a baseball.
From there, the memes only grew in popularity. People began creating their own versions of the “I’m not saying I’m Chris Davis” meme, as well as memes featuring Davis in various comedic situations.
What do people think of the memes?
As with any internet craze, opinions on Chris Davis memes are divided. Some people find them hilarious, while others think they’re mean-spirited and unnecessary.
“I think the memes are funny,” says baseball fan Sarah Johnson. “I feel bad for Chris Davis and what he went through, but at the end of the day, it’s just a joke. I don’t think anyone is really trying to hurt his feelings.”
Others, however, disagree. “I think the memes are really mean,” says Orioles fan Michael Brown. “Chris Davis is a human being with feelings, and I don’t think it’s right to make fun of him like that. It’s not like he was intentionally trying to be bad at baseball.”
