It all started in the summer of 2023 when a meme featuring Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande began circulating on social media platforms. The meme featured a side-by-side comparison of two images, one of Mariah Carey from the 90s and one of Ariana Grande from the present day. The captions read, “Mariah Carey then vs. Ariana Grande now. Who did it better?”

The meme quickly went viral, with thousands of people sharing it on various social media platforms. Fans of both artists were quick to weigh in on the debate, with some arguing that Mariah Carey’s vocal range and iconic hits from the 90s made her the clear winner, while others praised Ariana Grande’s modern sound and impressive vocal range.

The Origins of the Meme

The origin of the meme is unclear, but it appears to have started on Twitter before spreading to other social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Some speculate that it was created by a fan of one of the artists, while others believe it was started as a joke.

Regardless of its origins, the meme quickly gained traction and became a viral sensation. It even caught the attention of Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande themselves, who both responded to the meme in their own unique ways.

Mariah Carey’s Response

When asked about the meme in a recent interview, Mariah Carey laughed and said, “I think it’s hilarious. I love Ariana, and I think she’s an amazing artist. I’m flattered that people are comparing us.”

She went on to say that she doesn’t believe in competition between artists and that there’s room for everyone in the music industry. “We’re all unique and have our own sound and style. I’m just happy to be a part of the conversation,” she said.

Ariana Grande’s Response

Ariana Grande also weighed in on the meme during an interview, saying, “I think it’s cool that people are comparing me to Mariah. She’s a legend, and I’ve always looked up to her. It’s an honor to be mentioned in the same sentence as her.”

She went on to say that she has a lot of respect for Mariah Carey and what she’s accomplished in her career. “I hope I can have a career as long and successful as hers,” she said.

Fans React to the Meme

The meme has sparked a lot of debate among fans of both artists, with some taking sides and others simply enjoying the joke. Here are a few reactions from people who know the meme:

“I love both Mariah and Ariana, but I have to say, Mariah did it better back in the day. Her voice was just on another level.”

“I think Ariana has a more modern sound and is more relatable to younger audiences, but Mariah will always be the queen of Christmas music.”

“I don’t think there’s a clear winner. Both artists are incredibly talented and have made their mark on the music industry in different ways.”

Conclusion

While the Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande meme may have started as a simple joke, it has sparked a lot of interesting conversations about the two artists and their respective careers. Whether you’re a fan of one or both artists, there’s no denying that they both have a unique sound and style that has made them successful in their own right.

It’s hard to believe that it’s already been a decade since Mariah Carey became the subject of one of the internet’s most enduring memes. The clip of the pop superstar attempting to defrost a frozen turkey has been viewed millions of times, and has spawned countless parodies, remixes, and imitations. But why has this particular moment in Carey’s career resonated so strongly with audiences?

The Origins of the Meme

The infamous clip comes from a promotional video that Carey filmed for her 2008 album, “E=MC²”. In the video, she attempts to demonstrate the album’s theme of “cooking up some heat” by cooking a turkey in a microwave. However, she quickly realizes that the bird is still frozen solid, and delivers one of her most memorable lines: “I don’t know if it’s going to work, but we’re going to try.”

The clip was initially mocked by some fans and critics, who saw it as evidence of Carey’s diva behavior and detachment from reality. However, others found the clip endearing and relatable, and appreciated Carey’s willingness to laugh at herself.

The Memes Take Over

Over time, the clip took on a life of its own as internet users began remixing the footage and adding their own captions and music. Some of the most popular variations include a version set to the tune of the “Imperial March” from “Star Wars”, and a version in which Carey’s voice is replaced with the sound of a kazoo.

The meme has also inspired countless parodies and tributes, including a Thanksgiving-themed sketch on “Saturday Night Live”, and a video in which Carey herself revisits the moment and attempts to cook a turkey again (this time with more success).

The Legacy of the Meme

So why has this particular moment in Carey’s career endured for so long? Some argue that it speaks to the enduring power of the internet and its ability to turn even the most mundane moments into viral sensations. Others see it as a testament to Carey’s enduring popularity and cultural relevance.

Whatever the reason, the “Mariah Carey defrosting meme” shows no signs of melting away anytime soon. It continues to inspire new remixes, parodies, and responses, and has become a beloved part of internet culture.
