In 2023, the world witnessed a unique phenomenon in Cuban politics – the rise of “Memes de Diaz Canel.” For those unfamiliar with the term, memes are humorous images, videos, or pieces of text that are copied and spread rapidly on the internet. In this case, the memes revolve around the current Cuban President, Miguel Diaz Canel.

Who is Miguel Diaz Canel?

Miguel Diaz Canel became the President of Cuba in April 2018, succeeding Raul Castro. He is the first non-Castro to lead the country in over six decades. Diaz Canel is a firm believer in socialism and has been an active member of the Communist Party of Cuba for over 30 years. He is also a trained engineer and has held various government positions before becoming President.

The Birth of “Memes de Diaz Canel”

The first “Memes de Diaz Canel” started appearing on social media platforms in early 2021. The memes were initially created by young Cubans who wanted to express their frustration with the government and its policies. However, what started as a form of political dissent quickly turned into a viral sensation that swept across the country.

The memes are often humorous and satirical, poking fun at Diaz Canel and his government. They cover a wide range of topics, from the country’s economic struggles to Diaz Canel’s personal life. Some of the most popular memes feature Diaz Canel wearing a cowboy hat or riding a horse, poking fun at his attempts to portray himself as a man of the people.

The Impact of “Memes de Diaz Canel”

The rise of “Memes de Diaz Canel” has had a significant impact on Cuban politics. It has given a voice to young people who feel marginalized by the government and has created a new form of political discourse in the country. The memes have also brought international attention to the current situation in Cuba and have been covered by various media outlets around the world.

However, the government has not taken kindly to the memes. In August 2022, the Cuban government passed a law banning the creation and dissemination of memes that “discredit the dignity of the President or any other public official.” The law has been widely criticized by human rights organizations and has been seen as a crackdown on freedom of speech in the country.
