It’s been almost a decade since the release of the song “Breathe” by British electronic music duo The Prodigy, but in recent years, it has taken on a new life as a meme. The iconic opening line “Breathe, the pressure, come play my game, I’ll test ya” has been used in countless videos and memes across the internet, often accompanied by a distorted image or video. But what is it about this song that has made it such a popular meme? Let’s take a closer look.

The Origins of the Breathe Meme

The Breathe meme first gained popularity on the internet in the early 2010s, with various remixes and mashups of the song being shared on social media platforms like YouTube and Twitter. The distorted vocals and intense beat of the song made it perfect for use in memes, and it quickly became a staple of internet culture.

One of the earliest examples of the Breathe meme is a video uploaded to YouTube in 2011 titled “Breathe – The Ultimate Meme Compilation.” The video features a montage of various memes set to the song, including the infamous “Nyan Cat” and “Trololo” memes. From there, the meme only continued to grow in popularity.

The Breathe Meme Today

Today, the Breathe meme is still going strong. It can be found in a variety of forms, from remixes and mashups to reaction videos and even TikTok dances. The song has become so popular that it has even inspired its own subculture, with fans of the meme referring to themselves as “Breatheheads.”

But why has the Breathe meme endured for so long? According to internet culture experts, the answer lies in the song’s catchy beat and memorable lyrics. The opening line “Breathe, the pressure, come play my game, I’ll test ya” is instantly recognizable and lends itself well to remixes and mashups.

Response from Fans

When asked about the Breathe meme, fans had a lot to say. “I love the Breathe meme, it’s such a classic,” said one fan. “It’s just so catchy and fun to dance to.” Another fan added, “I think the Breathe meme has become so popular because it’s relatable. Everyone feels pressure and stress at some point in their lives, and the song captures that feeling perfectly.”

However, not everyone is a fan of the Breathe meme. Some critics argue that it has become overused and repetitive, and that the constant remixes and mashups have diluted the impact of the original song. “I used to love the Breathe meme, but now it’s just everywhere,” said one critic. “It’s lost its charm.”

However, like many viral moments, the phrase was quickly co-opted and turned into a funny meme. In this article, we’ll explore the evolution of the “I can’t breathe” funny meme and its impact on social media.

The Birth of the Meme

Within days of Floyd’s death, people began using the phrase “I can’t breathe” in memes that had nothing to do with police brutality. Some of these memes were genuinely funny, while others were simply tasteless. For example, one meme showed a person wearing a mask with the words “I can’t breathe” written on it, while another showed a cat with a plastic bag over its head and the caption “I can’t breathe lol.”

The memes quickly spread on social media, with people sharing them on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Some people found the memes to be a way to cope with the trauma of Floyd’s death, while others saw them as a way to trivialize the issue of police brutality.

The Backlash

As the “I can’t breathe” memes became more popular, a backlash began to emerge. Many people felt that the memes were disrespectful to Floyd’s memory and the larger issue of police brutality. They argued that the memes made light of a serious issue and were insensitive to the feelings of those who had lost loved ones to police violence.

Some people started calling out the creators of the memes, accusing them of being tone-deaf and insensitive. Others started sharing their own memes that tried to reclaim the phrase “I can’t breathe” and use it in a more meaningful way.

The Impact on Social Media
