Back in 2010, the world was introduced to a new Doctor in the long-running British sci-fi series Doctor Who. Matt Smith’s incarnation of the Time Lord quickly won over fans with his quirky charm, fez-wearing antics, and, perhaps most notably, his catchphrase: “Bow ties are cool.” The phrase quickly became a meme and has continued to be a beloved part of Doctor Who lore to this day.

The Origin of the Meme
The “bow ties are cool” catchphrase was first uttered by the Eleventh Doctor in the fifth season of Doctor Who. In the episode “The Eleventh Hour,” the Doctor is trying to convince a young girl named Amelia Pond to help him save the world from an alien threat. When she asks him why he’s wearing a bow tie, he responds with his now-famous line.
The line quickly caught on with fans, who began sharing it online and using it as a way to express their love for the show. Memes featuring the Eleventh Doctor and his bow tie began popping up all over social media, and the phrase became a shorthand for the Doctor’s quirky and lovable personality.
The Appeal of the Meme
So why did “bow ties are cool” become such a popular meme? For one, it perfectly captures the essence of the Eleventh Doctor’s character. He’s a bit of an oddball, with a penchant for eccentric fashion choices and a tendency to speak in riddles. The bow tie is just another part of his quirky charm, and the phrase “bow ties are cool” encapsulates that perfectly.
Additionally, the phrase is just plain fun to say. It has a catchy rhythm and a satisfying cadence, making it easy to remember and repeat. Plus, it’s a bit of an ironic statement – bow ties are typically seen as old-fashioned or stuffy, but the Doctor’s insistence that they’re cool subverts that stereotype in a playful way.
The Legacy of the Meme
Although Matt Smith’s tenure as the Doctor ended in 2013, the “bow ties are cool” meme has continued to endure. It’s become a beloved part of Doctor Who fandom, and fans still use the phrase as a way to express their love for the show and its quirky hero.
But it’s not just Doctor Who fans who have embraced the meme. “Bow ties are cool” has taken on a life of its own, with people using the phrase in all sorts of contexts – from fashion blogs to social media posts to everyday conversation. It’s become a sort of cultural shorthand for anything that’s a little bit quirky or unconventional.
The Doctor’s Fashion Legacy
Of course, the “bow ties are cool” meme is just one example of the Doctor’s enduring influence on fashion. Over the years, the various incarnations of the Time Lord have inspired countless fashion trends and styles.
For example, the Fourth Doctor’s signature scarf – a colorful, knitted monstrosity that he wore throughout his tenure on the show – has become an iconic piece of Doctor Who lore. Fans still wear replica scarves to conventions and cosplay events, and the scarf has even been parodied in other shows and movies.
Similarly, the Tenth Doctor’s pinstripe suit and Converse sneakers have become a popular cosplay choice, and the Eleventh Doctor’s tweed jacket and bow tie have inspired countless fashion bloggers and style influencers.
