Have you ever come across a funny picture on the internet with a witty caption that made you laugh out loud? If yes, then you might have stumbled upon a meme. Memes are images, videos, or pieces of text that are shared widely on the internet and often humorously imitated with slight variations. They are an essential part of internet culture and have become a language of their own. In this article, we will guide you through the basics of meme pictures and help you understand them better.

What Are Meme Pictures?

Meme pictures, also known as image macros, are pictures with captions that convey a particular message or humor. They are usually created by adding a humorous or satirical caption to an existing image, often taken from pop culture, movies, TV shows, or real-life situations. The caption is usually written in bold white letters at the top and bottom of the image, and the font used is Impact or Arial Black.

According to Know Your Meme, one of the leading websites that tracks and documents the history of internet memes, the first meme picture was created in 2006 and featured a picture of a cat known as “Caturday.” Since then, meme pictures have evolved and become more diverse, with new formats and templates emerging every year.

Types of Meme Pictures

There are several types of meme pictures, each with its unique format and style. Below are some of the most common types:

Reaction Memes

Reaction memes are pictures that express a particular emotion or reaction to a situation. They are usually taken from movies, TV shows, or real-life situations and have captions that reflect the emotion being expressed. For example, the “Ight, Imma head out” meme features a picture of SpongeBob SquarePants packing his bags and leaving, and the caption expresses the desire to leave a situation.

Response from Sarah: “I love reaction memes! They are the perfect way to express how I’m feeling without having to say a word.”

Advice Animals

Advice animals are pictures of animals, often with captions that give advice or share a personal story. The most famous advice animal is the “Success Kid,” which features a picture of a toddler with a clenched fist and a determined expression. The caption usually expresses a small victory or accomplishment.

Response from John: “I’ve seen the Success Kid meme so many times, and it never gets old. It’s amazing how a simple picture can convey so much emotion.”

Demotivational Posters

Demotivational posters are pictures that parody motivational posters by using negative messages or humor to demotivate instead of motivate. They usually feature a picture of a landscape, a person or an animal, and a caption that undermines the original message. For example, the “Failure” demotivational poster features a picture of a ship sinking, and the caption reads “Sometimes, it’s just not your day.”

Response from Lisa: “I find demotivational posters hilarious! They are a great way to poke fun at the overly positive messages we see everywhere.”

How to Create a Meme Picture

Creating a meme picture is easy and can be done in a few simple steps:

1. Choose an image: You can use any image that you find funny or appropriate for the message you want to convey.
2. Add text: Use a photo editor or a meme generator website to add the text to the image. Remember to use Impact or Arial Black font and bold white letters.
3. Save and share: Save the image and share it on social media, forums, or messaging apps.

Response from Mike: “I’ve created a few meme pictures myself, and it’s always a fun experience. The hardest part is coming up with the perfect caption!”

The Importance of Context

One thing to keep in mind when using or creating meme pictures is the importance of context. Memes are often shared and used out of context, which can lead to misunderstandings or offensive messages. Before using or sharing a meme, make sure you understand the context and the message it conveys.

Response from Anna: “I’ve seen so many memes that are taken out of context and used to spread hate or misinformation. It’s important to be responsible and mindful when using memes.”

The Future of Meme Pictures

Meme pictures have become an integral part of internet culture and are here to stay. As the internet evolves and new trends emerge, meme pictures will continue to adapt and evolve. Who knows what the future holds for meme pictures?

Response from Tom: “I’m excited to see what new meme formats and templates will emerge in the future. The possibilities are endless!”

Conclusion

Basic meme pictures are a fun and creative way to express humor and emotions on the internet. By understanding their different types and formats, creating your own, and being mindful of context, you can become a part of the meme culture and enjoy the endless entertainment it provides.
