In 2017, the internet was taken by storm by a rather peculiar meme that had a lot of people scratching their heads. It was called the “Gay Babadook” meme, and it featured the titular monster from the 2014 horror film “The Babadook” as a symbol for LGBTQ pride. At its peak, the meme was everywhere, with people sharing images of the Babadook adorned in rainbow colors and accompanied by cheeky captions. But as quickly as it rose to fame, it also fell out of favor, with many people forgetting about it entirely. So what was the Gay Babadook meme, and why did it become so popular?

The Birth of the Meme
The origins of the Gay Babadook meme are somewhat unclear, but it seems to have first gained traction on social media sites like Twitter and Tumblr in early June 2017. The first instances of the meme featured images of the Babadook with rainbow flags or other LGBTQ symbols, along with captions like “Can’t wait for the Babadook to come out and slay at Pride” or “The Babadook is gay and that’s okay!” The meme quickly spread, and soon there were countless variations and iterations of it.
The Meaning Behind the Meme
So why did the Gay Babadook meme strike such a chord with people? On one level, it was simply a humorous and irreverent way to celebrate LGBTQ identity and subvert the often-horrific imagery of horror films. But on a deeper level, the meme also spoke to a sense of marginalization and otherness that many LGBTQ people feel. The Babadook, as a monster that terrorizes a mother and her child, is a symbol of fear and exclusion. By reclaiming it as a symbol of pride and joy, the meme allowed LGBTQ people to assert their own power and agency in the face of oppression.
The Backlash
Of course, not everyone was a fan of the Gay Babadook meme. Some people felt that it was disrespectful to the original film and its creators, while others felt that it was making light of serious issues related to LGBTQ rights and discrimination. There were also concerns that the meme was being co-opted by non-LGBTQ people as a way to be “edgy” or “cool.” The backlash was not enough to stop the meme’s popularity, but it did indicate that not everyone saw it as harmless fun.
The Legacy of the Meme
So what happened to the Gay Babadook meme? Like many internet memes, it eventually fizzled out and was replaced by newer, fresher jokes and trends. However, it did leave a lasting impact on LGBTQ culture and the way that people think about monsters and horror. The Babadook itself became something of an LGBTQ icon, with fans creating art, cosplay, and even tattoos inspired by the creature. And more broadly, the meme helped to demonstrate the power of humor and subversion in the face of oppression.
