What is TSA Precheck?
Before we dive into the meme itself, let’s take a quick look at what TSA Precheck is. For those who don’t know, TSA Precheck is a program that allows travelers to expedite their security screening process at participating airports in the United States. By enrolling in the program and paying a fee, travelers can skip the long lines and keep their shoes, belts, and jackets on while going through security.
The Birth of the TSA Precheck Meme
In early 2023, a Twitter user with the handle @TSA_Precheck made a joke about how people who didn’t have TSA Precheck were “missing out” on a luxurious travel experience. The tweet went viral, and soon, people were creating their own versions of the joke, using images of celebrities and fictional characters to emphasize the absurdity of the idea that TSA Precheck was some sort of elite club.
As the meme spread, it took on a life of its own. People began creating elaborate images and videos that mocked the idea of TSA Precheck as a status symbol, and soon, the hashtag #TSAPrecheck was trending on Twitter and Instagram.
The Impact of the TSA Precheck Meme
While the TSA Precheck meme was mostly lighthearted and fun, it did have some real-world consequences. In the weeks following the meme’s explosion in popularity, there was a noticeable uptick in TSA Precheck applications, as people who had never heard of the program before became interested in learning more.
Additionally, the meme sparked a conversation about the accessibility of TSA Precheck. Some people pointed out that the program’s fees could be prohibitive for many travelers, and that it wasn’t fair to create a system where people who could afford to pay for TSA Precheck got to skip ahead of those who couldn’t.
The Legacy of the TSA Precheck Meme
Although the TSA Precheck meme has died down since its peak in early 2023, its impact is still being felt. Many people who enrolled in the program because of the meme have continued to use it on a regular basis, and the conversation about the accessibility of TSA Precheck has continued to evolve.
Additionally, the TSA Precheck meme serves as a reminder of how quickly things can go viral in the age of social media. What starts as a joke or a passing trend can quickly become a cultural phenomenon, with real-world consequences.
Responses from People Who Know It
Joanna, a frequent traveler who uses TSA Precheck regularly:
“I thought the TSA Precheck meme was hilarious! It’s true that the program can make travel a lot easier, but it’s also not as exclusive as some people make it out to be. I’m glad that the meme sparked a conversation about accessibility, though.”
Mike, a TSA agent:
“The TSA Precheck meme was definitely a topic of conversation among my colleagues. We thought it was pretty funny, but we also noticed an uptick in applications after it went viral. It just goes to show how powerful social media can be.”
Ashley, a traveler who doesn’t have TSA Precheck:
“I thought the meme was kind of dumb, to be honest. I don’t think it’s fair to create a system where some people get to skip ahead in line just because they can afford to pay for it. I’ll stick to waiting in line with the rest of the plebs.”
Final Thoughts
The TSA Precheck meme may have been short-lived, but its impact is still being felt years later. Whether you love it or hate it, there’s no denying that the meme sparked a conversation about accessibility and the power of social media. Who knows what the next viral trend will be, but one thing’s for sure: it’ll be interesting to watch it unfold.
